Time Management Techniques: How Setting Specific Goals Can Help You Succeed

by Tomas Turner

In today's times it's getting more difficult to stay on task and manage time wisely with all of the distractions and stress factors all around us. For example, how many times have you found yourself working on a task and then drifting off and doing anything but working?

You may decide you need to stretch, grab a cup of coffee or to use the restroom. An hour goes by quickly and nothing has been accomplished. How can you effectively manage your time? One solution to time management is actually in the clock itself.

48 Minutes: You Are On!

This is easy to set up. Take away all of your distractions. Turn off your phone, instant messenger, and any other chance for disruption. Now for the next 48 minutes work on that task.

In the next 12 minutes, you have a break, time to do what you need to do whether that be getting a cup of coffee or using the restroom. You can even surf the web, but only do so for the next 12 minutes. Once they are up, get back to the grind for another 48 minutes of focused, concentrated work.

Why does this make a difference? It keeps it so you know you only have that much time. It helps hone in your mind's abilities for that time frame.

In 48 minutes, you may be able to accomplish a project, tackle something new or plan a strategy. It does not matter what your project is, how you work or the type of work you do. By concentrating for that amount of time in one area, you will see results.

Get More Done

One of the best reasons to use this or other time management methods is that it allows you to put your best efforts forward during this brief period of time. By doing this, you actually can do much more in that amount of time than you would if you were trying to do two, three or more things in that time.

For example, perhaps you have a blog post you need to write, emails to answer and a business meeting to arrange. If you focus on just one of those areas first, complete it and then move on, you will likely get more done.

Likewise, if you spend a good deal of time trying to go back and forth with each of these projects at the same time, chances are good that at the end of the time slot, nothing has been fully completed.

Time management can help you to accomplish far more than you could accomplish if you tried to do many things at one time. You do not have to be ultra organized or completely on task every minute of your day. Giving yourself a break helps just as much.
