by Cameron Carter

Now a days our schedules are so filled with our responsibilities to work, home life, and society that it doesn't even feel like we're living life just worrying it away. Living such a hectic life leads to us not focusing or performing to the best of our abilities.

If you are in such a situation, all you really need to do to regain control is to de-clutter your mind, re-evaluate your priorities and re-create a clear path towards a peaceful and successful life.

Six Techniques for Eliminating Mental Clutter

1. Identify Your Priorities

In this life there are many things we are trying to get done, but you'll notice that some are more important than others. You need to take a step back and realize that some things are not something to stress over. Getting your presentation done for work is more important than dusting. While dusting needs to get done sooner or later its not a priority. So figure out what you need to do first so it gets your full attention and energy.

2. Do Not Stretch Yourself Too Thin

The more commitments you have, the less attention each commitment is getting from you, so think hard before starting on any new activity. Too many commitments will eventually take its toll on your body so you have to make sure not to over-exert yourself.

3. Learn To Say No

One of the most common reasons why people find themselves in the middle of a situation that they didn't want to be involved in at all is their inability to say no. This is pretty interesting because as kids, we were actually experts at saying no, and usually in a vehement manner at that. The next time someone asks you to do something and you know that it is simply not humanly possible for you to squeeze in another entry into your planner, just say no. Believe me, once you've done it, it won't seem so hard anymore.

4. Create a List of Things To Do

Now take the tasks that you've decided are most important from step 1 and make a list. Schedule out your time putting those tasks first on your list. Then put down the others and get them done. It's normal not to get the last things on you list done. Just put them on the next days list, and don't stress it as long as your finish your priorities.

5. Learn To Delegate

Whether you are at the office or at home, practice the skill of delegating work to other people. You have to admit the fact that it is just impossible for you to handle all the chores by yourself. Starting today, assign specific house chores to each member of the household, including the children. Make sure you give them age-appropriate tasks though. This will not only free a lot of your time, but it can also be a perfect opportunity to teach your kids the value of hard work and helping at home.

6. Clean Out Your Living Areas

Before you can de-clutter your mind, you should eliminate the clutter in your home and office first. It is actually true that if your surroundings are clean and organized, you can think much more clearly and your stress levels will plunge to zero.

There are actually no complicated techniques required for eliminating mental clutter. Most of the techniques that we mentioned are actually things that you can easily think of on your own.
