Tech Blog: Giving Voice To The Little Guys

by Ben Pate

At the end of the 20th Century, a new form of personal expression was developed. Using the internet, virtually anyone could create a personal journal, or blog, about almost any subject. One popular subject was the technology blog which served to inform and keep readers up to date with tech news. These tech blogs included reviews of new products to help readers separate which new tech items were improvements and which were a waste of money.

You may have visited a tech blog before buying your digital camera, to see what reviews it had received. Tech blogs give tech geeks a place to enthuse about the latest in modern technology, and their expertise has given them renown. No one would spend $400 on a camcorder or any other piece of technology without making some effort to find out what reviews it had received, and these folks are as well qualified as anyone to give their opinions.

Many people are by nature loners, preferring the dependability of technology to the fickleness of human company. But these "geeks," as we call them, are no longer runts to be picked on by bullies. Now we actively seek their advice on which new technological products we should buy and use or how to set up cell phones and wireless networks, to use just two of many examples.

You can find blogs that are written by technical people, for technical people. Hardcore gamer sites may feature $5000 souped up rigs especially for gaming, but most non-gamers would not be interested. Geeks seem to have an innate knowledge of machines and technical services. They can also help you get rid of terrible viruses and spying software.

When you think about it, technology is so entwined in our day to day life, its a wonder we all haven't become geeks. We have radio controlled garage door openers, cordless phones, lap tops you lug all around town with you. There are even cafes you can go to know and get a cup of coffee while logging in amongst dozens of other geeks. You can place calls to your home to tell it to turn lights on.

Basically the rise of tech blogs have given a voice to the little guys who just didn't have one before. People who are extremely shy can come off as fascinating, smart, and charming when they are looking at a box rather than a head full of hair and prejudices. These blogs have a major impact in the products we consume, and the companies we do business with.

Many of the gaming blogs tend to be geared toward the high-end gamer and not your average computer user.
